Past Work: Evidentiary
Evidentiary is about my experience with sexual abuse.
I painted from photographs taken of me and my sister by my step-father, my abuser. Through his lens, I have been able to document and validate my experience, and through my own I’ve transformed it into powerful and effective work.
I painted large black and white images, leaving the figures blank and ghostly (both central to the story and invisible), as well as tiny colorful close-ups, seductive jewels the size of printed photographs. These paintings were presented in conjunction with MP3 players chained to gesso covered stools, which played interviews between myself and those closest to me about my artistic process, the events that inspired me, and everything in between.
Evidentiary was shown at Zilkha Gallery in 2018.
